Most students download a past paper, read through the questions, nod along, maybe glance at the memo, and move on. That's not practice — that's revision with extra steps. A past paper is only powerful when you sit it like the real thing, mark it like an examiner would, and use the result to find out exactly where your marks are actually leaking. Here's how to do that properly.

TIP 01

SIMULATE REAL EXAM CONDITIONS

No phone, no notes, no pausing to look something up. Sit at a desk, set a timer for the paper's actual duration, and treat it exactly like exam day. Reading a paper with your notes open teaches you to recognise answers. Sitting it cold teaches you to produce them — which is the actual skill being tested.

Recognising an answer and producing one under pressure are two different skills.
TIP 02

TIME YOURSELF PER SECTION, NOT JUST THE WHOLE PAPER

Note the time when you move from Section A to B, B to C. Most students don't fail a paper on knowledge — they fail it on pacing, spending 40 minutes on a 15-mark question and then rushing the last section. Per-section timing shows you exactly where your pacing breaks down, not just that it did.

A paper you technically know but run out of time on has a pacing problem, not a knowledge problem.
TIP 03

ATTEMPT EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU CHECK THE MEMO

Write something for every question, even a guess or a partial method, before you look at a single memo answer. Checking as you go teaches your brain to lean on the memo instead of retrieving the answer itself — and retrieval, not recognition, is what builds exam-day recall.

TIP 04

USE THE MARK ALLOCATION, NOT JUST THE FINAL ANSWER

Every memo shows how marks are broken down within a question, not just the final answer — read that breakdown line by line, not just the bottom line. A 6-mark question usually has 4–5 individual marking points. If you only compare your final answer to theirs, you have no idea which specific step is costing you marks.

The memo's breakdown is more valuable than the memo's answer.
TIP 05

AWARD METHOD MARKS THE WAY EXAMINERS DO

In subjects like Maths and Physical Sciences, correct method with a small arithmetic slip usually still earns most of the marks — examiners are marking your reasoning, not just your final number. Learn to spot in your own work: was the method right and the answer wrong, or was the whole approach wrong? Those are very different problems to fix.

A wrong final answer from correct working is a different fix to a wrong final answer from a wrong method.
TIP 06

MARK AGAINST YOURSELF, NOT FOR YOURSELF

It's tempting to give yourself the benefit of the doubt — "I basically had that." Don't. If it's not clearly on the page the way the memo wants it, mark it wrong. An honest, slightly harsh self-mark that shows real gaps is far more useful than a generous one that hides them until exam day.

A self-mark that flatters you is a self-mark that lies to you.

TIP 07

TRACK TOPICS, NOT JUST PAPERS

Don't just record "Paper 1, 2023: 62%." After marking, list out which specific topics the marks you lost came from — trig identities, stoichiometry, whatever it is. A score tells you how you did. A topic breakdown tells you what to actually study next.

"62%" tells you nothing you can act on. "Lost 8 marks on trig identities" does.
TIP 08

LOOK FOR REPEAT STRUCTURES ACROSS YEARS

Work through 3–4 years of papers for the same subject and you'll start noticing certain question types come back year after year in a similar shape, just with different numbers or context. Once you can recognise the structure, you can prepare for it directly instead of hoping you get lucky with what comes up.

Question styles repeat more than most students expect — that repetition is free preparation.
TIP 09

NOTICE WHY YOU'RE LOSING MARKS, NOT JUST WHERE

Split your lost marks into three buckets: careless errors (you knew it, rushed it), conceptual gaps (you didn't actually understand it), and time pressure (never got to attempt it properly). Each bucket needs a completely different fix — more practice under time pressure won't help a conceptual gap, and re-learning theory won't fix a pacing problem.

Careless, conceptual and time-pressure mistakes need three different solutions — don't treat them as one problem.
TURN IT INTO A WEAK-TOPICS SYSTEM
TIP 10

BUILD AND MAINTAIN A RUNNING WEAK-TOPICS LIST

Keep one running list — paper, digital note, whatever — of every topic that's cost you marks across every past paper you mark. After each new paper, add to it and cross off anything you've since nailed twice in a row. Before your next paper, deliberately hunt for questions on whatever's still on that list, rather than just working through papers front to back.
