Two students can spend the exact same three hours "studying" and walk away with completely different results — not because one is smarter, but because one used a method that actually builds memory and the other used one that just felt productive. Here's the difference, and how to spend your study time on what genuinely works.
WHY MOST "STUDYING" DOESN'T ACTUALLY WORK
TIP 01

RE-READING AND HIGHLIGHTING FEEL PRODUCTIVE — BUT AREN'T

Reading a page for the third time makes it look familiar, and your brain mistakes that familiarity for actual knowledge. This is called the illusion of competence — you recognise the material when it's in front of you, but the moment it's an exam question with no notes nearby, that recognition doesn't transfer into recall.

Feeling like you know it and being able to produce it are two different things.
TIP 02

PASSIVE STUDYING VS ACTIVE STUDYING

Passive methods — reading, highlighting, watching a video without pausing — put information in front of your eyes. Active methods — testing yourself, explaining a concept out loud, solving a problem from scratch — force your brain to pull information out of memory. That retrieval effort is what actually strengthens the memory, not the exposure.

The harder your brain has to work to produce an answer, the better it sticks.
TIP 03

THE FORGETTING CURVE — WHY CRAMMING LOSES TO SPACING

Without review, memory of new material drops off sharply within a day or two — most of what you crammed the night before an exam has already started fading before you even walk into the hall. Reviewing material at increasing intervals resets that curve each time, which is why the same total hours spent spread out beats the same hours crammed into one session.

One long cram session loses to the same hours spread across several shorter ones.
THE METHODS BACKED BY EVIDENCE
TIP 04

ACTIVE RECALL — TEST YOURSELF, DON'T RE-READ

Close the book and try to write or say everything you remember about a topic before checking your notes. Use flashcards, blank-page recall, or past paper questions — anything that forces retrieval rather than recognition. This is consistently one of the most effective study techniques there is, and it's also the one students use least, because it feels harder than re-reading.

If it doesn't feel a little uncomfortable, it's probably not active recall.
TIP 05

SPACED REPETITION — REVIEW BEFORE YOU FORGET, NOT AFTER

Instead of studying a topic once and moving on, revisit it after 1 day, then 3 days, then a week, then two weeks. Each review should happen right around when you're starting to forget — that's when retrieval is hardest and most effective at rebuilding the memory. A simple written schedule or app-based flashcard system works fine; the spacing matters more than the tool.

Reviewing right before you'd forget builds stronger memory than reviewing too early or too late.
TIP 06

THE FEYNMAN TECHNIQUE — TEACH IT TO FIND THE GAPS

Pick a concept and explain it out loud in the simplest language possible, as if teaching a younger student who's never heard of it. The moment you stumble, get vague, or reach for jargon to cover a gap — that's exactly where your understanding breaks down. Go back to that specific gap, fix it, then try explaining the whole thing again from the start.

Struggling to explain something simply usually means you don't understand it as well as you thought.
TIP 07

INTERLEAVING — MIX TOPICS INSTEAD OF BLOCKING THEM

Studying one topic for a full two hours (blocking) feels organised, but switching between related topics or question types within a session (interleaving) forces your brain to actively decide which method applies each time — much closer to what an actual exam demands, where questions aren't grouped by topic for you.

Real exams don't sort questions by topic for you — your practice shouldn't either.
PUTTING THE METHODS INTO PRACTICE
TIP 08

TURN YOUR NOTES INTO QUESTIONS, NOT SUMMARIES

After a class or a reading session, don't just summarise what you learned — rewrite it as a set of questions you could be asked. This does two things at once: it forces active processing while the material is fresh, and it hands you ready-made active recall material for every future review session.

A page of questions is more useful three weeks from now than a page of summary notes.

BUILD A SPACED REVIEW SCHEDULE AROUND YOUR EXAM CALENDAR

Work backward from your exam dates and plan review sessions for each topic at increasing intervals, rather than only revisiting things once, right before the test. This is where a proper study schedule and spaced repetition meet — the schedule isn't just about finding time to study, it's about controlling exactly when each topic gets reviewed.

A study schedule's real job is timing your reviews, not just blocking out hours.
TIP 10

PAST PAPERS ARE ACTIVE RECALL AND INTERLEAVING IN ONE

A timed past paper forces retrieval under pressure, mixes question types the way a real exam does, and gives you an immediate, honest measure of what actually stuck versus what only felt familiar. If you only have time for one method this week, sitting and marking a past paper properly covers more of the evidence-backed ground than any other single activity.
